From local initiatives 1959 the Federal association followed as spreading self-help and professional association. Today it is a community, in which approximately 28,000 humans are united. In over 240 local and circle associations parents, honorary aides and specialists do indispensable work.

The associations created many mechanisms in cities and municipalities: of early promotion and advisory boards over family-exculpatory offers up to schools, apartment mechanisms and workshops. In 50 clubs and groups obstructed and non-disableds humans meet each other.

The Institut Mensch, Ethik und Wissenschaft gGmbH (IMEW)(Institut humans, ethics and science gGmbH) is world-wide the first institute for ethics, which particularly considers the perspective of people with handicap. To there partners belong the 9 most important federations of the obstruction assistance  in Germany (among other things Lebenshilfe e.V. (life assistance registered association), BVKM, the anthroposophical, the protestant and the catholic obstruction assistance, VdK).

It offers regularly meetings to Disability Mainstreaming, UN obstructed right convention, to biomedical and - ethical topics. The institute areas are barrier-free accessible. If necessary also writing and sign language interpreters are engaged.

The association Netzwerk behinderter Frauen e. V. (network of handicapped women registered association) offers many interesting events. Except regular dates such as breakfast, sheep head meetings, info café, knitting network and girls club there are highlights such as carnival without costume obligation, film evenings, readings, lectures with discussion, summer celebrations, walks with guidance and many, many Workshops. A support group for women with multiple sclerosis stands also on the program like a discussion circle for women with learning difficulties. There are seminars to join in and free legal advice.
